The blend

'Mokha Java' was the first blend ever created. Coffee originated in Arabia and was first sold through the port of 'Mokha' (Al Mukha) in Yemen. The 'Mokha' in this blend is a naturally-processed Ethiopian coffee, adding notes of fruit and cocoa. Coffee was then cultivated in Indonesia and shipped out through the island of 'Java' (Jawa). The 'Java' in this blend is a wet-hulled Balinese coffee, which gives deeper tones of earth and spice. The result is a marriage between the brightness of Africa and the depth of Indonesia - in the cup it is a very dynamic, yet balanced, coffee.

Ethiopian Shakiso

The lot used for this blend comes from 33 smallholders who contributed fruit to the Sookoo Coffee Farm, an estate that grows their own coffee and processes coffee for local producers. It’s fairly common to have estates such as the Sookoo Coffee Farm process fruit from nearby farmers who otherwise might not have access to proper equipment.

Balinese Kintamani

Balinese producers continue to maintain a traditional rural lifestyle organized around a Subak Abian, which is a reference to the ecologically sustainable irrigation systems developed more than 1,000 years ago by Hindu priests, who practice Tri Hita Karana (the three sources of prosperity), a philosophy focused on the harmonization between the environment, humans and God. These traditions are followed in coffee cultivation, which means pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are never used. While the classic Indonesian flavor profile of spice, earth, and big body come through, this coffee also has some delicate characteristics, such as raspberry, rhubarb, and orange zest.

I have been a subscriber since their launch, having been introduced to Better Grounds at a coffee festival. I have enjoyed every monthly selection so far! Their service is a great choice for anyone who, like me, wants easier access great quality coffee and anyone who might feel overwhelmed trying to look into the sourcing bonafides of different brands. I appreciate that they do this work for their clients, and also support different roasters who are doing good work.
